Climate Commitment – Hilton Hotel, Yaounde

With the support of the British High Commission, Yaounde implemented the climate commitment project with over 50 High-level participants at the hybrid private sector commitment event, which took place on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at the Hilton Hotel. The main objective of the event was to mobilise and galvanise the private sector in Cameroon to pledge and commit to taking urgent actions that will help in the fight against climate change, a global challenge requiring collective action at local levels. Participants were encouraged to adopt and implement measures that will enhance their transition to low carbon operating models and circular economy.

The event presented a platform to build and consolidate a powerful coalition of non-state actors conscious of the significant role that the private sector can play in helping to redress the climate crisis and other environmental challenges. It also provided a conducive environment to drive powerful conversations (between the private sector, government officials, and members of diplomatic missions) around climate change.

Circular Economy Forum (CEF-Cameroon)

Contrary to our current linear economic model in which we ‘take-make-consume and throw away, the circular economy offers an opportunity to use resources to their highest value and continuously re-use rather than them being thrown away. Natural resource exploitation and agriculture are the greatest contributors to Cameroon’s economy. However, these sectors are highly affected by overexploitation and climate change with a negative impact on the national economy and the well-being of local communities whose livelihood depend on these resources. To conserve the country’s resources and reduce the impacts of climate change, consumption of natural resources must be reduced and ever-more responsible production methods established.

Green Growth Capacity Building Workshops

This was a two-day training for budding entrepreneurs, small businesses and civil society organisations who have innovative ideas on how climate change can be tackled. Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) account for about 90% of businesses worldwide. What this implies is that, there can be no transition to net zero without the involvement of SMEs. The green growth capacity building workshop was therefore designed to inspire startups, small businesses and project owners to incorporate sustainability practices in their operations at every level. Small businesses of today are potentially the big businesses and multinationals of tomorrow. Thus, grooming them to embrace sustainability practices at the early stages will ensure business models that minimise negative impacts on the environment as they grow.

Tree planting

The importance of trees cannot be overemphasized. Promulgating tree planting activities within the cities and in schools in particular is a perfect way to educate and help connect the students to the benefits of trees and fostering environmental stewardship. We believe it is fundamental to engage children from their tender ages through various educational institutions as key actors in the promotion of sustainable development practices.

TrashChallenge – Commonwealth Week 2022

With an estimated population of about 3 million, Yaoundé, the political capital of

Cameroon, produces about 1,800 tonnes of waste per day, or about 700,000 tonnes yearly. The population growth rate is estimated at 4.5% per year. The increasing urbanisation of the city leads to an ever more exponential growth of waste, and therefore makes the very recurrent question of its management worrisome. Several reports state that, 75% of waste comes from households, 20% from public services
